Penicuik House wedding – new venue in Midlothian

Photo taken during wedding meal at the Penicuik House.

When Katy and Ali set out for their usual weekend dog walk through Penicuik Estate, they had no idea they would be wandering straight into their dream wedding venue. Located just south of Edinburgh in beautiful Midlothian, Penicuik House isn’t just another venue – it’s a place where history, nature and celebration come together to create an unforgettable wedding experience.

A couple of weeks before the wedding I visited the estate myself, with my dog, to explore the grounds. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t been there before – the landscape is breathtaking. The Old Penicuik House ruins create a romantic and atmospheric backdrop that wedding photographers dream of.

Katy & Ali’s wedding took place in November, when the estate was glowing with autumn colour. The trees were covered in golden leaves and the low winter light made everything feel warm and cinematic. I can’t wait to return and see this venue in the summer.

Back to the wedding day – a team of some of the best Edinburgh wedding suppliers helped bring the couple’s vision to life. From the beautiful floral arches by Ochre Botanicals, to the relaxed shared platters created by Edinburgh Catering Company, every detail reflected their laid-back style. Katy wore a timeless, elegant gown by Pronovias. Couple’s dog, Fergus, made a special appearance after the ceremony for some cute wedding photos.

In true fun loving fashion the couple skipped the traditional first dance and went straight into a lively ceilidh – the perfect evening reception at the  Penicuik House wedding.

Tips for couples getting married at the Penicuik House

1. Expect changing weather. This is Scotland and rain can make an appearance even in the middle of summer. But don’t panic., rain at Penicuik House creates some of the most atmospheric images. The venue offers partial shelter, and the estate looks incredible with a wet shine.

2. Make time for a walk. The estate is huge, and some of the best photo spots are a five- or ten-minute wander away. Build a little breathing space into your timeline so you can enjoy it without rushing.

3. Consider including your dog in the day. If your dog is part of the family, Penicuik House is a fantastic place to include them in photos. The estate’s open paths and woodland areas give dogs space to move freely, and they often create spontaneous, joyful moments that make portraits feel authentic and memorable. Just bring a leash and a few treats to keep them comfortable and happy.

4. Wear comfortable shoes for the grounds. The woodland areas are gorgeous, but heels can sink into the grass. Having a second pair of shoes makes exploring much easier.

5. Let the day flow naturally. Penicuik House lends itself to relaxed, documentary-style photography. The more you enjoy yourselves, the more authentic your photos will feel. While wedding photos are important, the memories you make on the day matter most. Focus on being present, sharing moments with friends and family, and soaking in the atmosphere. The best photos often come when you’re too busy enjoying the day to even notice the camera.

Katy and Ali’s wedding felt like the perfect blend of history, nature, emotion, and a few beautifully unpredictable moments, exactly what makes Penicuik House so special.
